Stratos is Awarded SATCOM-II Contract to Provide Satellite Services to Federal and Defense Agencies
Bethesda, Md. (May 8, 2007) - Stratos Global Corp. (TSX: SGB), the leading global provider of advanced mobile and fixed-site remote communications solutions, today announced that it was among the companies awarded a SATCOM-II contract by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).
The GSA's SATCOM-II contracts provide federal and defense agencies with the next generation of high quality, global satellite communications solutions. The award authorizes Stratos subsidiary Stratos Mobile Networks, Inc. (SMN) to provide those agencies with the industry's most advanced mobile satellite communications products and services. The SATCOM-II program has an estimated value of $750 million over the life of the five-year, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contracts.
Satellite provides the only network available in areas not served by terrestrial communications infrastructure. This is critical for federal workers fighting wildfires, patrolling remote borders and responding to natural disasters. With the high-speed, reliable communications networks provided by this contract, federal agencies can use mobile satellite systems and VSAT networks to fulfill their communications requirements anywhere in the world.
"GSA's customers have critical national missions that need the exceptional capabilities offered by SATCOM-II,' said GSA's Federal Acquisition Service Commissioner Jim Williams. "We're not only providing satellite communications today, but we've designed SATCOM-II to keep pace with the phenomenal growth in satellite technology we expect over its five-year contract life. That's important news for our customers."
Stratos President and CEO Jim Parm said, "Our portfolio, combined with our market-leading position, proves that we can offer the full range of services required by GSA customers. With owned-and-operated teleports, global office coverage and a worldwide network of partners, we have the capabilities and operational efficiency required to deliver reliable service and support to our customers in a cost-effective manner.'
Parm added, "This award demonstrates GSA's confidence in our ability to deliver the most sophisticated mobile and fixed satellite technologies demanded by federal and defense agencies. Through our subsidiary, SMN, we will provide an integrated approach to deliver the diverse technologies that these agencies need, from a single source.'
For more than 20 years, Stratos has provided reliable, cost-effective satellite communications solutions to numerous U.S. military and civil agencies, including the Dept. of Defense, Military Sealift Command, Army National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, White House Communications Agency and the U.S. State Department.
