FleetBroadband from Stratos Supports First European Contract for Electronic Fishing Logbooks

--Integrated solution is migrating 100 Irish fishing vessels to electronic reporting--

Bethesda, Maryland (November 19, 2009) - Stratos Global Corporation, the leading global provider of advanced mobile and fixed-site remote communications solutions, today announced it is part of a team that has won the first European contract to migrate fishing vessels from a paper logbook system to electronic recording and reporting.

The contract to fit up to 100 fishing vessels, awarded by Ireland's Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA), is seen as a blueprint for the European fishing industry. SFPA selected a solution that included Inmarsat FleetBroadband mobile broadband satellite service from Stratos, Satlink FB250 satellite communications hardware and Sirius IT vCatch e-logbook software.

The solution follows new European Union (EU) legislation designed to capture real-time information on the amount of fish being caught by member states. The goal is to improve the sustainability of the world's fish supplies by ensuring stocks are harvested efficiently. More than 10,000 vessels across Europe are expected to convert to e-logbooks by early 2010.

As an additional benefit, FleetBroadband from Stratos can be used to improve crew welfare by providing fishermen with broadband web access, email, SMS and voice communications - as well as access to the latest news services.

"By working closely with team-leader Satlink, Inmarsat and Sirius, we have engineered a FleetBroadband solution that is ideally suited to meet the demanding requirements of the SFPA and all bodies charged with the long-term future of electronic recording," said Stratos President and CEO Jim Parm.

He added, "Today the performance of fisheries management organizations and their control of fisheries are often hamstrung by the latency and inaccuracy of existing paper logbook systems. This integrated solution provides the SFPA with the world's most effective maritime communications service, ensuring the best management strategy for the resources and the industry."

Customers selecting Stratos as their FleetBroadband provider are attracted to the wide range of value-added services that Stratos offers.
