StratosMAX II - Google Earth™ Coverage Map

Stratos provides many different remote communication solutions, enabling “extended office” connectivity around the world.

StratosMAX II is our high speed, low latency WiMAX service serving the Oil & Gas community in the Gulf of Mexico.

The StratosMAX II coverage area and maximum data speeds will vary with daily atmospheric conditions, antenna height, and the distance to the nearest StratosMAX II tower. The speed of the specific product purchased (e.g., "StratosMAX II Bronze", "StratosMAX II Silver", etc.) will determine the maximum speed.

StratosMax II - Google Earth Coverage Map

Using Google Earth, you can view the level of coverage you may expect at a given location on a "blue sky" day. Just follow this 6-step beta process to get started:

Step 1 Launch the Google Earth application on your computer

If you do not have the Google Earth program installed, then you can download it from Google at http://earth.google.com and follow the instructions to install that program. Open the program after installing.

Step 2 Determine antenna height

Determine if your antenna will be on a 35' tall vessel or a 75' tall platform

Step 3 Select your map

Download the correct map (35' or 75') by clicking on one of the links below, then saving to your desktop. Open the file by double clicking on the file.

Step 4 Viewing the Google Earth map

The map should open in Google Earth, but if it doesn't, please copy the file and paste it into the Google Earth's left column in the section labeled "Temporary Places". Click on the file in Temporary Places and it should open up and display on the map.

Step 5 StratosMAX II blue-sky coverage

What you'll see is the StratosMAX II "blue-sky" coverage "cloverleaves" across the Gulf, with each color indicating a maximum potential data speed.

If you left click on any of the shaded areas you will see the coverage at the point you have clicked, e.g. "512K".

Step 6 Find blue-sky coverage for your specific site

Click on the pushpin button with the "+" at the top of the Google Earth screen.

A popup window will appear; please add the lat/long of the site being examined and click on "OK" button.

A pushpin appears on the map at the location you specified in Step 6; if you left-click on the pushpin's written label it will tell you the expected "blue-sky" coverage at that specific point.
